Blue Note’s Legacy

(CAT) Una publicació editorial que estableix un diàleg entre la visió occidental del jazz i la realitat dels seus orígens, a través de figures i influències clau de Blue Note, una de les discogràfiques més rellevants de la història del jazz.

(ENG) A long-form editorial publication that seeks to deconstruct Western (and white-centric) jazz narratives, foregrounding the genre’s real origins.

The publication contrasts two visual languages. On one hand, this section (marked by the mint-coloured paper) represents the true origins of jazz, a genre that emerged as a counterpoint to European music among African Americans in the United States. Jazz arose in everyday settings, where music was part of social life rather than a formal or academic space.

The typographic treatment and the images convey this sense of spontaneity, collectiveness, closely linked to improvisation and shared experience.

On the other hand, this section represents the institutionalisation of jazz, as the genre gradually entered academic and formal contexts. What began as a popular and community-based practice became codified, taught and performed within structured environments, closer to the traditions of European music it once opposed.

The typographic treatment and imagery reflect this shift: more controlled, ordered and refined, emphasising composition over spontaneity. Here, jazz is presented as studied and systematised, highlighting technique, authorship and formal presentation rather than collective improvisation and everyday experience.
